Located on a southern-facing slope in the Oakland hills, the house is built on an existing concrete garage, the only surviving structure from the firestorm of 1991. The house is a juxtaposition of two volumes. Rising from the existing garage structure, the first volume responds to the grid of the neighborhood. Elevated two floors above the street, the second volume turns toward the spectacular view of the canyon beyond. As the house’s centerpiece, the glass stair tower links the entry foyer to the upper floor where the living room, kitchen and dining room open themselves to the view and landscape through a series of balconies and terraces. At the top level, all bedrooms converge around the common space, which opens to the intimate patio and garden.
