Bauman College
A Design for a Holistic Nutrition and Culinary School read more...
We recently helped Bauman College, a holistic nutrition and culinary school, adapt this former World War II resource center into a state-of-the-art culinary teaching facility. The 1949 building was landmarked by the City of Berkeley, thereby restricting exterior building changes. Working within the existing building shell, we converted the former great hall into a dual-kitchen teaching facility. Each light-filled teaching and demonstration kitchen includes a hotline with Type I hood, prep areas, finishing area, and lecture space. A large walk-in refrigerator and scullery were added to the adjacent space and former offices were converted to classrooms. The plain, non-historic entry gate and fence were updated to provide an opportunity for signage and give the school a dramatic presence on the street.
