A coastal café where ocean-inspired details create a serene space for connection.

Tidal Coffee’s design draws on Monterey’s history with the sea, and especially on Ed Ricketts, the marine biologist whose lab on Cannery Row made him a local legend. His work inspired the lighting. Custom chandeliers take their cues from scientific instruments, and wall sconces made from laboratory beakers bring a note of curiosity and discovery into the room.

The coast shapes the rest of the story. A calm palette of ocean blues runs through the space and leads to a custom tile back wall, whose graphic pattern suggests waves breaking and pulling back across the sand. It’s the café’s focal point and sets a slow, rhythmic mood for the whole room. Along the banquette, the fabric’s pattern echoes the shapes of ocean creatures, a quieter detail guests discover once they sit down.

The result is a neighborhood café that is part science, part shoreline, and a relaxed spot to linger over coffee.
