The Valiant – Private Housing Development for UC Berkeley Students

Berkeley, CA
Located just one block from U.C. Berkeley, this new 83-unit building, dubbed The Valiance, provided an enhanced living experience for students attending UC Berkeley. The 8-story structure features a mix of unit types, including studios, 2- bedroom, 3-bedroom and 4-bedroom plans to allow for a variety of living options. The Valiant stands out among housing options near campus by providing an assortment of amenities with one on almost every floor: a ground floor work lounge, a second-floor fitness center, a roof top kitchen, study lounge and a large, dramatic roof deck topping off the 8th floor.

To enliven the pedestrian experience along busy Durant Avenue, the ground floor façade consists of large windows, a recessed resident entry, and two retail spaces.  The building presents as both traditional and modern with balanced proportions of classic base, middle and decorative top all clad in contemporary materials. The large vertical element above the entry is provided to break up the mass of the building and create a visual play of light and shadow.

The project provides five very low income units, bike parking for 52 bikes and easy access to public transit.
