Student Housing Renovation

This 1960’s building was badly in need of a make-over in both appearance and performance. The project involved remodeling the apartment interiors to increase unit size and bedrooms as well as a major renovation of the building exterior and courtyard. The original building design enclosed the courtyard behind a high slumpstone wall, creating an unfriendly face to the public and a prison-yard feeling within.  To mitigate both of these conditions, we removed the wall and replaced it with a series of screens and new entry sequence, providing security, visibility and improved accessibility. The balcony rails and stair towers were also opened up to allow natural light and airflow into circulation areas. The central tower is adorned with a mural by artist Nikki McClure, contrasting natural colors and forms with the more formal, square courtyard.
