Metro Theater Building
Adaptive reuse brings new life to shuttered movie theater read more...
Working with the City of San Francisco’s Historic Preservation Commission, the S.F. Neighborhood Theater Foundation and numerous community groups, we converted the historic Metro Theater to a mixed use building with street level retail and an elite fitness club as the new anchor tenant.
To reach consensus with all parties in this sensitive conversion, we provided enhanced safety through a major seismic retrofit, the addition of a multipurpose /community room, and restoration of key historic features. The new design added three interstitial floors providing 25,000 square feet of new leasable space and 3,000 square feet of new retail space on Union Street. Studio KDA was also the architect of record for new retail tenant, Illy Caffe.
