Maker’s Row is a vibrant outdoor marketplace centered on artist- and maker-driven retail, located within the Fourth Street shopping district in Berkeley. Conceived as an accessible platform for creative entrepreneurs, the project introduces a series of compact “maker shacks” that provide affordable, flexible space for artists and craftspeople to launch and grow their practices.
The small-scale structures are arranged to form a pedestrian promenade—a shaded lane that defines an intimate paseo and creates a strong architectural identity. An overhead framework supports seasonal installations and holiday lights, reinforcing the marketplace’s festive character year-round.
Each maker shack is designed to be customizable. Operable façades, display surfaces, and adaptable frontages allow individual artists to shape their space to reflect their brand and craft—blurring the line between workshop and storefront and inviting engagement between artists / makers and visitor.
By prioritizing artist spaces and small-scale production, the project strengthens the Fourth Street district’s tradition of independent retail while fostering economic opportunity for artists.
