“UGLY CHIC”. Our GC, Chip Harley of Holland and Harley, coined this term as we kept requesting that the peeling plaster and paint be kept in it’s original form, providing a backdrop for the modern wood and steel design elements. Melding messy traditional Japanese ramen shops with uptown Oakland, the space reflects chef Kyle Itani’s eclectic culinary background. From Eater SF: “The new ramen spot from chef Kyle Itani (Hopscotch) is located in Uptown Oakland, featuring 49 seats (plus 18 at the bar). Abueg Morris Architects (Comal, The Advocate) designed the space, which integrated some of the 1930s elements that were part of the original tenant, Woolworth’s, decor. Plaster columns, a terrazzo floor and old wallpaper were mixed in with birch wood walls. “
Located just a few blocks away from Hopscotch at 1738 Telegraph Avenue, the planned Itani Ramen will be a solo project for Itani — and one that’s close to his heart. The fourth-generation Japanese American is a huge ramen fan, even hosting the popular Friday night Yonsei Ramen Shop pop-up during Hopscotch’s early days.
