The San Francisco Ferry Building

Built in 1898, the San Francisco Ferry Building has served for more than a century as a gateway to the city. After surviving the 1906 earthquake and functioning as the Bay Area’s primary transportation hub until the late 1930s, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Since 2019, we have served as the Ferry Building Marketplace’s in-house architects, helping care for and maintain one of San Francisco’s most recognizable civic spaces. Home to local food vendors, artisanal makers, and its well-known colonnade of arches, the Ferry Building remains an active gathering place in the Bay Area.

Working closely with the building’s owners, Hudson Pacific Properties, and their leasing team, we provide ongoing architectural support. Our work includes test-fit plans to study potential food and retail tenants, ROM pricing drawings to estimate build-out costs, design concepts to inform lease discussions, and permit and construction drawings with integrated interior design services to carry projects through completion.

Navigating the permitting process is a key part of the work. Changes for new tenants require review by agencies including the Port of San Francisco, the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Familiarity with these agencies and their requirements helps streamline approvals. Experience with the historic structure is also important, from coordinating plumbing installed by boat at low tide to working within the building’s existing constraints for kitchen hoods, mechanical ductwork, and floor penetrations.
