2427 San Pablo Ave

On a tree-lined stretch of San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, 2427 Shattuck Avenue will provide affordable, community-centered housing for people in the “missing middle”, those with annual earnings in the range of $60,000 – 70,000. The 5-story building offers a variety of living options, including 12 one-bedroom units and 69 micro units that are clusters around shared common kitchens, lounges and laundry facilities. Permitted under Berkeley’s Group Living Accommodation, each of the micro units contains a bedroom/living room, full bathroom and kitchenette.

Inspired by the leafy surroundings, the building features central lounges and kitchens with double height windows spilling out onto verdant balconies. These spaces, along with smaller fifth-floor balconies and a large roof deck invite residents to gather and enjoy the unobstructed views of the Bay. The balconies’ steel construction is contrasted with the greenery of the draped and trailing plants, providing a central focal point when viewed from the street.

Residents have the option to live independently or join the community by using the central kitchens and lounges located on the 2^nd and 4^th floors.

The project employs the state density bonus and the GLA designation to increase the number of units provided. The symmetrical, stacked layout allows for ease and affordability of construction. The project is currently in the entitlements phase.
