At just 2,500 square feet, the Ploughshares Nursery is an ambitious building for its size. Designed to house a retail nursery, an education center, and staff offices, the new building will also be the most sustainable project permitted in the City of Alameda. The project uses sun, wind, rain and earth found on the site to provide a working model for resource-efficient building. The design, which features straw bale and earth bag construction, a living roof, rainwater catchment and reuse, as well as photo voltaic power, is intended to teach by making the building systems attractive and transparent.

The nursery is operated by Alameda Point Collaborative (APC), a non-profit organization focused on ending homelessness. The project will be built, in part, by community volunteers and APC’s formerly homeless residents.
