Historical research inspires adaptive reuse of former movie theater read more...

Located in the City of Berkeley’s downtown district, this project took a long shuttered movie theater and created a new vibrant infill building. The renovation included stripping off the old theater façade, renovating many of the buildings original historical details and creating new retail and food facilities at the street level with offices above. Interstitial floors were added in the volume of the former theater to provide additional leasable space. The building was quickly leased out and now features retailers Ben & Jerry’s as well as the Michelin-rated restaurant, Ippuku and UC Berkeley administration offices.
