Artist’s Compound

For two artists in Berkeley we added a large wing onto the back of their small house, creating two art studios (his & hers) on the ground level as well as a master bedroom, new bathroom and kitchen expansion above. Each of the studios has glass and aluminum roll up doors to open onto the garden, fill the space with natural light and allow large sculptures and paintings to be moved around easily.

The addition was designed to both complement and contrast with the original house. Board and batten siding unites both volumes, while aluminum sheets and doors create a bright contrast to the traditional materials and colors.
